During the winter the lights on our previously illuminated cross, which is on the front elevation of the church, went out.  Shortly after, on a particularly stormy night, a side section of the cross came adrift and it became obvious that the cross was in a sorry state and needed to be replaced if we were to declare our church’s presence to the people of Maghull.

We set about the task of trying to find a company which would be willing and able to produce and install a suitable replacement.  The task proved to be very difficult and, after a few disappointments, we came to the conclusion that we required the advice of the Mersey Synod Property Officer, Mike Rushton.

He was able to put us in touch with the owner of a firm in Garston who came to discuss our requirements and provide us with an estimate.  Both the Elders and Management Committee gave this careful consideration and agreed to the project going ahead. The new cross was produced to the same design and dimensions as the original, to comply with the original planning permission. However, its frame is in solid oak and the lighting system consists of LED lights, so, not only should it have a good lifespan, it will also be cheaper to run than the previous fluorescent light system.

It was installed with the aid of a large “cherry picker” by a very efficient team of fitters and now shines forth each evening, allowing all who travel along Northway to be aware that our church is well and truly there.  We hope it shines out as a welcoming message to all who see it.
